Crochet Toddler Hat

After our second large snow storm, I decided it was time to make my daughter a hat.

I looked around at different hat patterns until I got a good idea of what I wanted. I chose an earflap hat with little braids on the sides. I also chose to do this in a three color design.

Materials:

  • Size H crochet hook
  • Small amount of worsted weight yarn in three colors or however many you choose
  • Tapestry needle

Method:

This hat should fit a 2-3 year old.
  1. Ch 2, 9 DC in magic ring. Join into first DC and Ch 2
  2. 2 DC in each stitch. Join into first DC and Ch 2 (18)
  3. 2 DC in 1st stitch, 1 DC in next stitch, continue around. Join into first DC and Ch 2 (27)
  4. 2 DC in 1st stitch, 1 DC in next 2 stitches, continue around. Join into first DC and Ch 2 (36)
  5. 2 DC in  1st stitch, 1 DC in next 3 stitches, continue around. Join into first DC and Ch 2 (45)
  6. 2 DC in 1st stitch, 1 DC in next 4 stitches, continue around. Join into first DC and Ch 2 (54)
  7. Rounds 7-13 DC in each stitch joining the same as above.
Earflap:
  1. Ch 2, HDC 10, Ch 2, turn
  2. HDC2tog, HDC 6, Hdc2tog, Ch 2, turn
  3. HDC across, Ch 2, turn
  4. HDC2tog, HDC 4, HDC2tog, Ch 2, turn
  5. HDC across, Ch 2, turn
  6. HDC2tog, HDC 2, HDC2tog, Ch 2, turn
  7. HDC2tog twice, Ch 2, turn
  8. HDC2tog, fasten off
  9. Count 20 stitches in the front of the hat and start the earflap pattern from the 21st stitch.
  10. SC around the hat.
  11. Join and fasten off
Braid:
  1. For 1 braid cut 3 1 yd strands of each color. Fold in half and pass the loop through the last stitch of the earflap. Braid these strands for 5.5 inches then tie together and trim the ends. Repeat for the other side.
I hope you enjoy my tutorial!
